How to Detox After a Heartbreak

After a bad breakup, it can feel like you've been put through the wringer. You're exhausted. You're angry. You're sad. You feel lousy.

You'd give anything to forget your ex ever existed. You want to feel better – like yourself again.

When you're going through heartbreak, one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health is detox. I'm not talking about going on a juice cleanse. I'm talking about an emotional detox.

Here's how:

Focus on You

When you're in a relationship, it's all about your partner and making your partner happy. Many of us lose sight of who we are when we commit ourselves to another person. We try to mold ourselves to be our partners' idea of perfection.

Focusing too much on others and neglecting ourselves can lead to exhaustion

Now that you're free, you can focus on you again.

  • Pamper yourself.
  • Exercise.
  • Eat right.
  • Take up a hobby.
  • Take yourself on dates.
  • Rediscover yourself.
  • Try new things.
  • Be bold.
  • Be fearless.

Focus on you and your goals for your life. Not only will this keep you busy, but you'll also be making positive changes in your life.

Research shows that being kind to yourself can increase your happiness.

Disconnect from Social Media

A breakup is the perfect time for a digital detox. Social media is a great way to stay connected with friends and family, but it can also make it difficult to heal and move on.

You can do the worst thing right now is spend all night scrolling through your ex's Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.

It doesn't help that your social media feed is littered with posts about happy engagements, first dates, weddings, and glowing couples in love.

Guess what? You don't have to put yourself through that. There's no need to break your heart every day.

Take a break from social media. It's okay to disconnect for a little while. You don't owe anyone an explanation for your absence. You're doing this for your sanity and peace.

When you finally come back to social media, consider blocking or unfollowing your ex and your ex's friends.

The best way to detox and heal after a breakup is to let go of the relationship. It's hard to do that when you continually see your ex on your social media feeds.

Be Mindful of Your Consumption

Right now, you're in a fragile state of mind. You're feeling a whirlwind of emotions. A sad commercial can set you off into a crying fit.

Detoxing is all about getting rid of toxins. This means being careful about what you consume – and I'm not just talking about food. Eating healthy will help you feel better, but being mindful about what you're watching and listening to will also impact.

Listen to music that makes you feel good. Watch movies and TV shows that make you feel good. Sad songs and violent movies will only keep you in a negative state of mind. It's okay to cry and feel sad or angry, but allowing these emotions to linger will only make it harder for you to move on.

Cry it Out

Breakups are hard. Even if you blame your ex for the split, you're still going to feel angry and upset. It doesn't matter how much your ex has wronged you, and there will be moments when you feel like bursting into tears.

It's okay to cry. Let it out. Crying can make you feel better. Studies have found that emotional tears contain more stress hormones and more manganese than reflux tears (tears that happen when you get something stuck in your eyes). This means that you're detoxing your body of cortisol (the stress hormone), and you're also activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which puts your body back into a state of balance.

But the most important thing is to let your sadness go. Don't hold onto it. Don't wallow in your sadness. You deserve to be happy and to move on.

Detoxing after a breakup can help you start the healing process. Getting rid of your past relationship toxins will give you a fresh slate to start building your new life.
